About Event

All summer, our Founders × Researchers workshops have kept circling back to one question: what should the next generation of AI startups actually look like now? On Wednesday 18 November we're taking it on directly.

We'll be in conversation with Neal Lathia and Anil Stocker.

Neal is a co-founder and CTO of Gradient Labs, which builds AI agents for regulated financial services. Before that, Neal was Director of Machine Learning at Monzo, and he did his PhD at UCL. That makes him well placed to talk about both sides of the room.

Anil has spent over a decade building Kriya, one of the UK’s longest-running fintechs, using data and technology to reinvent how businesses access finance. He brings the view of a founder who has scaled a company through several generations of the technology.

We'll get into:

  • How do you compete when the foundation model companies keep moving into your territory?

  • What makes an AI business defensible, now that the model itself isn't a moat?

  • Which technical capabilities are still missing, and what founders wish academics were working on.

As always, this is a meeting of minds rather than a lecture. Technical founders who have shipped AI products sit alongside AI researchers who are curious about commercialisation, and the discussion belongs to everyone in the room.

The event is co-organised by Magda Woods (And The Robots), Martin Goodson (Evolution AI) and the AI Hub in Generative Models (https://www.genai.ac.uk/).

When: Wednesday 18 November, 4–7pm 4pm: doors open, coffee and meet-up 5pm: conversation with Neal and Anil, then open discussion
