​There are many things in the world that are difficult to put into words. People do not always have clear motivations, nor are they always able to fully understand or articulate what is happening inside themselves. Some people think in words, some in music, and some in images. His cinema is profoundly “visual” in this sense.

​If Marguerite Duras’s films often begin with language and transform text into images, his films almost occupy the opposite extreme: the image itself is the primary language. He bypasses words and explanation, relying instead on an almost intuitive mode of perception. Through images, he captures the emotional states of people within particular situations, allowing those images to awaken feelings within the viewer.

​His films are also known for their minimal plots and slow pacing. There is very little conventional narrative momentum, and at times even dialogue is sparse.

​Because the trilogy explores human alienation in the modern world, it is also commonly known as the “Trilogy of Alienation.”
