Rewrite or Evolution? Modernizing Systems in the Age of AI

Rewrite or Evolution? Modernizing Systems in the Age of AI When the system becomes the bottleneck for business growth.

Many growing companies eventually hit the same moment.

The business keeps moving fast, but the system behind it does not.

At that point, a difficult question appears: Should we keep evolving the system, or is it time to rewrite it?

Rewrites are risky. Many fail. They are often underestimated, poorly scoped, and harder for the organization to absorb than expected.

But staying with a system that slows down the business can be just as dangerous.

System modernization is rarely just a technical problem. It affects product speed, team structure, and the company’s ability to grow. At some point, the system stops supporting the business and starts limiting it.

In this round table, we will discuss how technology leaders approach these decisions in practice.

Topics we will explore:

  • When evolution is the better strategy. How far can refactoring and gradual modernization take you?

  • When does a rewrite make sense? What signals show that incremental improvements are no longer enough?

  • Why so many rewrites fail Technical, organizational, and leadership mistakes behind unsuccessful rewrites.

  • How to run a rewrite without stopping the business Patterns for replacing large systems while keeping product development moving.

  • AI and system modernization. Where AI can realistically help today and where expectations are still ahead of reality.

This session is built around real cases, practical experiences, and lessons learned from modernizing complex systems.

It is not a lecture. The goal is to share experiences, compare approaches, and openly discuss difficult modernization decisions together.

Circle is a small group of peers. Space to go deep, ask real questions, and share what actually works (and what doesn’t). The session focuses on a challenge most scaling teams face: you add people to move faster and everything slows down. We’ll explore why that happens and discuss practical ways to redesign teams for real speed, shaped by real cases and challenges from the room.

Circle:
- a small group of peers
- no presentations, no sales
- space to go deep, ask questions, and share what actually works (and what doesn’t)
