Nucleate Houston BioChallenge
🚀 Want to learn how to ideate and pitch a biomedical startup?
Are you interested in science innovation, entrepreneurship, or technology commercialization? The 2026 Nucleate BioChallenge is a hands-on opportunity to explore how promising biomedical technologies can be evaluated, developed into a startup concept, and communicated to a broader audience.
Participants will work in interdisciplinary teams around real biomedical patents provided by our university partners. You do not need a pre-existing startup idea or prior entrepreneurship experience—only curiosity, creativity, motivation, and an interest in learning how scientific discoveries may translate beyond the laboratory.
Through a series of virtual workshops, mentor-supported co-working, and team-based problem-solving, participants will gain exposure to core elements of early-stage life-science commercialization. Topics will include reading and evaluating patents, freedom-to-operate considerations, patent licensing, and market and competitor analysis. Teams will use these perspectives to shape and refine a thoughtful startup concept around their assigned technology.
The program will conclude with an in-person Pitch Showcase at the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (LILIE), where teams will present their concepts to industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and technology-transfer-office judges. The top three teams will receive cash prizes, with $2,500 awarded to the winning team.
Whether your background is in medicine, science, engineering, business, law, or design, BioChallenge offers a collaborative environment to learn, contribute your perspective, and build practical skills in biomedical innovation.
