Science Untapped is a initiative by Uncharted Science, a science and technology collective from Hyderabad which is organising this series of lectures.
In this lecture on birds, we are bringing Sriram Reddy to speak about endangered birds of Telangana. Sriram Reddy is a bird watcher and photographer. He is going to share his work and talk more about the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list and how Telangana's state bird - Indian Roller (palapita) has been recently up listed into this category.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the Red List, the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of species. It serves as a “barometer of life,” helping scientists and governments assess the risk of extinction and take informed conservation action.
This talk introduces the IUCN, explains how species are assessed and categorized on the Red List, and explores how species can be uplisted or downlisted based on changes in population, habitat, and threats.
Using the Indian Roller, Telangana’s state bird, as a case study, the session highlights why this once-common bird has been uplisted to Near Threatened, the factors driving its decline, and what actions are needed to secure its future.

Sriram Reddy is a Bird Watcher and a Photographer based in Hyderabad. He is an active member of Hyderabad Birding Pals (HBP), an ngo which conducts free Sunday birdwalks in the Telangana state, where he engages with fellow birders, especially those new to the world of birdwatching.
