Gibbon Watching and Listening: Voices of the Forests
Southeast Asia's gibbons and siamangs face severe threats from deforestation and poaching driven by the illicit wildlife trade. Addressing these systemic pressures requires a fundamental shift in how local forest communities are engaged and supported. True conservation success occurs when indigenous and local communities have secure, sustainable livelihoods that incentivise forest stewardship and withstand external pressures to overexploit.
To amplify voices from the forests, Save the Gibbons Alliance is bringing together Karen Community Gibbon Tours, Roots & Shoots Malaysia, and Save the Earth Explorium for an online sharing session to exchange experiences and explore ways responsible tourism can protect forests, people, gibbons, and their songs.
What to expect:
A pre-recorded virtual tour through the forest in Huay Pakoot, northern Thailand, with the local guide from Karen Community Gibbon Tours.
A presentation about the Maniq community in Satun, southern Thailand, by Save the Earth Explorium.
Interactive dialogue between community representatives to address current trends and insights on ethical, community-led eco-tourism that protects people, forests, and gibbons.
What travellers should look for when choosing tourist destinations and service providers that support genuine conservation work.
