Panel Discussion: Out of the Loop - Who's in Charge When AI Builds Itself?
AI systems now write most of the code at frontier AI companies.
In June, Anthropic published a report stating that it could automate all AI research by as early as 2027. A few months later, reports now claim that OpenAI has largely automated the training of new experimental models. If this progress continues, AI systems might soon be able to develop more capable systems without human oversight, potentially triggering an ‘intelligence explosion’ and exposing us to extreme risks. Many in the AI industry worry that this will be beyond our ability to control: over 1,300 employees at leading AI companies published a joint statement warning that frontier AI development is outpacing governments’ ability to manage the situation.
How should policymakers respond to this situation? Join us for a stimulating discussion between UK parliamentarians and subject-matter experts on the risks and challenges these advances pose, followed by an audience Q&A session.
