About Event

When Ifeoma Ozoma discovered that New Mexico schools were requiring young kids to read to an AI avatar named Amira—and that “she” was recording their voices to train on, without parental consent—Ifeoma quickly turned her outrage into action. She built a DIY website to help other parents understand what was happening and push back. In six weeks, this scrappy, grassroots campaign worked: eighteen school districts in New Mexico have now opted out of using Amira.

When we see tech harming our kids or our communities, we want to do something about it. But many of us get stuck in the same place: where do I even start?

On Thursday, October 15th 12-1pm ET, join Ifeoma Ozoma and Computer Says Maybe host Alix Dunn for a participatory conversation about turning activation into action. We’ll explore how she identified levers of power in New Mexico’s school districts, how she and other parents used them to create change, and how we can push back on AI in our own communities.

This is the first of our Collective events, where we take conversations beyond the podcast with special guests. Learn more about The Maybe Collective and join us here. This event is open to the public, but it won’t be recorded—so if you’re interested, please join us live!
