Unlocking Government Funding for Research Translation

Co-hosted by Carnegie Mellon Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC) and College of Engineering (CoE).

Wondering how to strengthen your next NSF, NIH, or DoD proposal—or craft a winning SBIR/STTR submission? This session brings together two back-to-back discussions designed to help researchers unlock $250K–$1M+ in non-dilutive funding.

We’ll begin with a panel on Regional Collaboration & NSF Partnerships, showcasing how teaming up with another university can expand access to federal funding programs. Learn from the CMU–Lehigh NSF ART collaboration and the RETI initiative, and hear from faculty PIs who have successfully navigated multi-institution proposals. Panelists will share strategies for aligning your work with agency priorities, tips for increasing your chances of success, and examples of how cross-university partnerships strengthen innovation ecosystems.

Following the panel, dive into a hands-on Writing Winning SBIR/STTR Proposals Workshop. Experts and past awardees will provide insider guidance on how reviewers at NSF, NIH, and DoD evaluate proposals, common pitfalls to avoid, and strategies to strengthen both technical and commercialization sections of your submission. You’ll walk away with actionable approaches to craft a competitive proposal and secure funding to translate your research into impact.
