Innovation Highlight: Engineering Next-Generation Proteins with Constructive Bio
This talk will explore how Constructive Bio is redefining protein engineering by reprogramming the genetic code of living cells. By expanding the range of amino acids that can be incorporated into proteins, their platform enables the creation of novel biomolecules with functions beyond those found in nature.
Daniel de la Torre will discuss how advances in synthetic genomics and genetic code engineering are unlocking new possibilities for the design and scalable production of proteins, with applications spanning biotechnology and therapeutics. The talk will highlight how integrating cutting-edge biology with engineering principles is enabling the development of next-generation proteins with unprecedented precision and functionality.
About the speaker
Dr Daniel de la Torre is VP of Research and Development at Constructive Bio, where he leads the development of platforms for genome synthesis and genetic code reprogramming. He completed his PhD in Biological Sciences in the laboratory of Jason Chin at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, where he contributed to foundational advances in synthetic genomics.
His work has focused on engineering organisms with redesigned genetic codes, including contributions to the development of recoded bacterial genomes and systems for incorporating non-natural amino acids into proteins.
At Constructive Bio, he leads research aimed at enabling the programmable, sustainable production of novel biomolecules, bridging fundamental synthetic biology with real-world applications.
Company Blurb - Constructive Bio
Constructive Bio is a synthetic biology company pioneering technologies to rewrite the genetic code of living systems. Building on decades of academic innovation, the company develops platforms for genome synthesis and engineered translation, enabling the creation of proteins and biomolecules that cannot be produced using natural biology.
By engineering cells to incorporate non-canonical amino acids and produce complex molecules with high precision, Constructive Bio aims to transform how biologics are designed and manufactured, with applications in medicine, materials, and sustainable bioproduction.
