3-month Program: Kek Lapis Compost Stewardship
3-month Program: Kek Lapis Compost Stewardship
Want to experience community composting and be part of the full cycle — from building a compost heap, to learning to read its progress, to harvesting the finished compost and returning it to the soil?
Join us for a 3-month hands-on compost stewardship program.
Cuifen Pui and Rao Yongliang are makers of living compost. They make hot compost heaps using a layering method. Cuifen calls this the “Kek Lapis” approach to compost-making.
Beyond layering, “Kek Lapis” reminds us to work with the organic materials available in our environments, and turn perceived limitations into possibilities.
No prior composting or gardening experience needed! Bring your curiosity and passion for Earth and People Care.
What we’ll do together
1. Build a compost heap
We begin with a 1.5-hour theory session, followed by hands-on compost-making. Depending on how the group is feeling on the day, we may flip this around and get our hands dirty first!
2. Learn to read the heap
We have 4 subsequent weekly sessions to observe, tend and learn from the compost heap as it transforms.
In between these sessions, you may also join our trained volunteers for a mid-week check-in. This is an opportunity to notice what is happening in the heap and practise responding to what you observe.
3. Compost maturation
After our weekly sessions, the heap enters a 2-month maturation period.
During this time, you may want to continue composting by starting a smaller heap at home. We can coordinate this together, so you can practice your skills with a smaller heap.
4. Return finished compost to the soil
In early January, we gather to apply most of the finished compost to the soil at our venue sponsor's site.
Bring some of the finished compost home with you — and stay for a potluck as we celebrate completing a compost cycle together!
