Cempasúchil en Tela (Marigold to Cloth)
A Two-Part Botanical Dye & Block Printing Workshop
Create a one-of-a-kind textile while learning about the cultural significance of cempasúchil (marigolds) and the traditions of Día de Muertos.
Over two gatherings, you will naturally dye a cotton headband using marigold flowers, then return to hand block print the finished piece with original Día de Muertos-inspired designs. Along the way, we'll make space for storytelling, creativity, and community.

🌼 Part I: Botanical Dye (Thursday, August 20)
Begin by learning the basics of botanical dyeing and how marigold flowers have long been used to create beautiful natural color. Each participant will dye their own cotton headband in a cempasúchil dye bath, creating a rich golden piece that will continue to develop character as it dries.
As the fabric soaks, we'll gather in community over agua fresca and light bites. Those who wish are invited to share a memory, story, or tradition about a loved one they are remembering this season—or simply listen and hold space alongside others.
Participants will leave with their naturally dyed headband to dry before returning for Part II.
🧡 Part II: Block Printing (Sunday, August 23 | 12-3 PM)
Return to see your naturally dyed headband and add your own finishing touches through block printing.
Using an original collection of Día de Muertos-inspired hand-carved printing blocks created by Helena Martinez of Hecho By Helena and Katie Woodward of Woodward Printing Co, you'll print your textile to create a wearable keepsake that celebrates remembrance, creativity, and culture.
While we create together, participants are also invited to submit a photograph and story of a loved one to be included in this year's Community Ofrenda at the Wadsworth. Whether you choose to share or simply spend time making alongside others, this gathering is an opportunity to honor those we carry with us through art and community.
By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a handcrafted piece to wear throughout Día de Muertos season and a deeper connection to the traditions that inspire it.
Workshop Notes
Can't make Part I? You're still welcome to join Part II and block print a bandana or headband. Advance RSVP is required so we can prepare enough materials for everyone.
Can't make Part II? No worries! Your naturally dyed headband will be available for pickup at Gentle Bull Studios during regular business hours beginning August 25. You're welcome to enjoy it as-is or save it for a future creative project.
We encourage participants to attend both sessions to experience the full process—from flower to finished textile—but each gathering is designed to be welcoming and meaningful on its own.
