Chatting With AIs: A Breakdown
Language, our ancestral way to triangulate a shared reality, is now spun by a machine. And so, we talk. Interactions with LLMs can be useful, useless, interesting or weird - but the interaction space itself is an epistemic blur. Part-real and part-simulated, a new ‘intersubjectivity’ is here to haunt our categories.
Join us for a short presentation by Chinmayee followed by a discussion that will seek to provoke and hopefully organise our thoughts and feelings around the anthropomorphic interface of AI chatbots. Real human needs, from convenience to connection, may find their fulfilment here, but sustaining the illusion of personhood is a strange place to be stuck on our journey with machine evolution. What if the superest or the generalest forms of machine intelligence came in metaphorical shapes other than humanoid?
We can look for clues in the mechanics of our daily lives. In an AI-infused world where good things happen, what are you disencumbered of? Which parts of your cognition, if any, are safely outsourced? Who keeps creative control? What aesthetics and cultures find equilibrium there? What do you defend, and what do you forsake?
