Is it okay for people to use AI as their therapist? Should AI be banned from schools? Should all AI development be slowed down?
AI is having significant impacts on the everyday lives of people, ranging from the relationships we form with one another to the state of the current job market. Students will soon have to vote on bills surrounding AI development, which requires a general understanding of perspectives on AI topics and how it affects society, yet there are not many opportunities for constructive discussions about AI development and its broader implications, particularly within university communities.
The first half of this event will involve a general discussion and debate surrounding how AI is currently impacting spheres such as education, art, the job market, and relationships, such as the use of AI in classrooms and for therapy.
The second half of this event will address perspectives on AI development from a broader perspective, including pausing/slowing down AI development, role of government regulation, and how data centers will impact local communities and the environment.
This is meant to be a safe and open discussion open to ALL disciplines that make up the body of UC San Diego. Through this event, students will have the opportunity to interact with opposing perspectives on AI policy and explore how civic participation and legislation will impact the trajectory of AI.
Format
The way that this event will be formatted is that a statement will be projected such as “all AI in universities should be banned”. There will be four groups: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree. Students will go to whichever group they feel that they align with and discuss their thoughts with their group. Then, representatives from each respective group can give reasoning as to why they identify with their group, and participants can shuffle around if they feel their opinion on the topic has changed after the discussion. Students do not have to speak or participate if they do not feel comfortable, it is perfectly fine to just go to your respective group and observe the discussion as a spectator. However, active participants will get special prizes. After each question and discussion, each side will be laid out on a slide to cover opposing perspectives.
