About Event

Join us on 31 October for a private exhibition tour of Kevin Osepa’s Ta akinan at Stieglitz 19 in Antwerp.

How do we inherit the stories, rituals and spiritual knowledge of those who came before us?

Few contemporary artists explore the relationship between Afro-Caribbean identity, spirituality and ancestral memory with the sensitivity of Kevin Osepa. Born and raised in Curaçao, the photographer and filmmaker creates evocative visual worlds in which personal histories intersect with collective experience.

A central influence in Osepa’s practice is Brua, a spiritual tradition in the Dutch Caribbean that brings together African, Indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Drawing on the rituals, customs and stories passed down through generations, his work moves between the everyday and the mystical, the visible and the invisible. His images invite us to look beyond what is immediately apparent and consider the knowledge, beliefs and histories that exist beneath the surface of everyday life.

This exhibition offers an opportunity to discover Osepa’s practice in an intimate setting.

My take on the exhibition, by Art Gallivant:

What draws me to Kevin Osepa’s work is the way he makes space for forms of knowledge and experience that cannot always be explained through what we see. His images and installations invite us into a world where spirituality is not separate from everyday life, but woven into family histories, cultural traditions and the ways people understand themselves.

You don’t need to be familiar with Curaçao or Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions to connect with Osepa’s work. His practice opens up questions that reach far beyond its specific cultural context:
