Screening & Panel | San Juan Hill: Manhattan's Lost Neighborhood
Presented in collaboration with the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Join us for an evening of storytelling, reflection, and dialogue as we screen San Juan Hill: Manhattan’s Lost Neighborhood, a moving documentary directed by Emmy Award winner Stanley Nelson.
Before Lincoln Center became a landmark of global culture, the area was home to San Juan Hill—a vibrant and diverse community that was a hub of creativity, innovation, and resilience in the first half of the twentieth century. Through newly uncovered archival footage, expert commentary, and first-person storytelling from former residents—narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Ariana DeBose (West Side Story)—the documentary uncovers the untold history and enduring spirit of a community displaced by urban renewal and redevelopment in the 1940s and 1950s.
Following the screening, a panel conversation will bring together artists, scholars, and community leaders to reflect on San Juan Hill’s lasting legacy and its relevance in the greater context of educating the future generations. The discussion will explore how engaging with the history of this neighborhood can enrich student formation—deepening understanding of place, culture, and social responsibility—and how history, art, and memory continue to shape the spaces we inhabit and the communities we build.
Reception to follow.
