Books & Booze: Metamorphosis [ENG]
A month of exploring identity, alienation, and what it means to remain human in a world that often values us only for what we can contribute.
Much of our identity is shaped by the roles we occupy: professional, provider, friend, daughter, partner. But what happens when those roles are suddenly stripped away? How quickly do our relationships change when we are no longer productive, useful, or recognizable to the people around us? In a society that often measures worth through achievement and performance, these questions feel more relevant than ever.
For this edition of Books & Booze, we will explore The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, one of literature’s most enduring and unsettling works. When traveling salesman Gregor Samsa awakens transformed into a monstrous insect, the physical transformation quickly gives way to something even more profound: an examination of family, obligation, isolation, and the fragile nature of identity. Kafka invites us to question how easily humanity can be overlooked when someone no longer fits society’s expectations.
Join us for an evening of thoughtful conversation as we unpack themes of self-worth, burnout, familial duty, social alienation, and the tension between individuality and obligation. Together, we’ll explore why The Metamorphosis continues to resonate over a century after its publication, what Kafka’s surreal narrative reveals about modern life, and how our own sense of belonging is often shaped by the expectations placed upon us. As always, the discussion is designed to be accessible and engaging whether you’ve read the entire book or are simply curious about its ideas.
The evening will feature themed cocktails inspired by the novel’s surreal imagery and darkly symbolic world, creating an atmosphere that is equal parts thought-provoking and inviting. Books & Booze gatherings are a signature Troisième Cercle ritual, offering space for meaningful dialogue while strengthening the relationships that define our community.
Expect honest exchanges, unexpected perspectives, and conversations that challenge how you see yourself, your relationships, and the roles we all inhabit.
