Write Your Shit Pitch
A free workshop for freelance writers to beat pitch paralysis.

You have a story idea, and you want to see it published.
It’s time to WRITE THAT PITCH ALREADY.
Let’s do it together. And let’s start with a shit pitch.

What’s a shit pitch?

It’s the first, unpolished version of your pitch that you write in 15 minutes or less. No research required. No more procrastinating. Just getting the pitch on the page, and going from there.

In this 60-minute FREE workshop, you’ll…

  • FINISH the first draft of your pitch

  • Get a free pitch template

  • Get tips and tricks for sending your strongest pitch

  • Hear pitch feedback and freelance advice from someone who’s been full-time freelance for six years

  • Get real examples of pitches that worked

Jillian Anthony, a freelance writer and former lead Editor of Time Out New York, is your host. A fellowship of freelancers is your cohort.

Jillian will share an easy-to-follow pitch template.
Then, we’ll spend ~15 minutes writing our shit pitches and getting all our ideas on the page. No editing allowed!
Jillian will share some simple next steps so you can tighten up your pitch, fill in any holes, and get ready to SEND IT to the right editor/publication.
Anyone who has a bit more time can hang around and get feedback on their initial pitch, or ask Jillian any burning questions about pitching and freelancing.
You’ll leave the workshop with the first draft of your pitch written down — and the biggest obstacle toward pitching your story complete.

BONUS: I’ll share three of my pitches that worked — real pitches that landed me stories at Cosmopolitan, Business Insider, and Contently.

Come prepared with: Your story idea. That’s it!

Who's your host?

Jillian Anthony is a freelance culture writer and editor who’s been published in the New York Times, Vox, HuffPost, Cosmopolitan, and many other publications. She was previously the lead Editor of Time Out New York and the Deputy Editorial Director of Culture Trip. She is the Newsletter Editor for bestselling author Dr. Pooja Lakshmin (Real Self-Care). She also writes the newsletter Cruel Summer Book Club about making space for your art and yourself, and hosts a podcast of the same name. She’s supported many writers and creatives through 1-on-1 pitch coaching and career consulting.

Why am I hosting this workshop?

I created Write Your Shit Pitch to help share the gospel of a favorite piece of writing advice: write the shit draft first and get it out of the way so you can go on to create your best work. Allowing yourself to write a shitty first draft is an essential part of the writing process! And one I find myself and others procrastinating on for way too long. I won’t let our ideas die before they even hit the page — this is my small but mighty way to support freelance writers’ creativity and productivity.
