Halloween-Screening: Zombie Films
German cinema helped give birth to horror with classics like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and a new generation of filmmakers is reviving that tradition today. After last year's look at the genre films of the 1970s, this year we turn to the zombie, one of horror's most versatile figures and often read as an allegory for conformity, racism, and capitalism.
Rammbock: Berlin Undead (Dir. Marvin Kren, Germany 2010, 63 min.)
Heartbroken Michael comes to Berlin to return his ex-girlfriend's keys and ends up trapped in her apartment building during a zombie outbreak. This was Germany's very first zombie film.
Ever After / Endzeit (Dir. Carolina Hellsgård, Germany 2018, 90 min.)
After a zombie epidemic, two very different women flee from Weimar to Jena, one of the last safe cities. Along the way, they discover that nature has taken over the world. The film is based on Olivia Vieweg's graphic novel and was made by an all-female crew.
