Beyond Removals: Why Forest Carbon Reductions Still Matter
As recent guidance from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the International Standards Organisation's (ISO) 14060 Standard expands the role of high-integrity carbon credits in corporate climate action, attention is increasingly turning to the future of forest carbon. While carbon removals have captured headlines and investment, forest carbon reductions remain one of the most immediate, scalable, and cost-effective tools available for addressing climate change today. Both standards make it clear that reductions have a role to play in addressing ongoing emissions on the road to net zero.
This session, the third in a series of talks hosted by SCS Global Services, will challenge the notion that climate impact begins and ends with removals. Bringing together leaders from governments, development institutions, project developers, corporate buyers, and independent validation and verification bodies, the discussion will explore why forest carbon reductions across a range of project types and jurisdictional approaches remain critical to achieving global net-zero goals.
Participants will examine how the forest carbon market has evolved in response to growing expectations for transparency, integrity, and measurable outcomes. Advances in satellite monitoring, digital MRV systems, strengthened methodologies, enhanced safeguards, and innovations across project-based and jurisdictional forest carbon programs, including REDD+ and IFM, are transforming how forest climate outcomes are quantified, managed, and verified. These innovations are helping build confidence in forest carbon credits and creating new opportunities to deliver climate benefits at scale while supporting biodiversity, local communities, and sustainable development.
