How We Dine Is How We Live — Peruvian Edition
“Causa” — Food as Resistance, Food as Belonging.
At Socialoftas, we gather around food not simply to taste it — but to understand what it carries.
This month, we travel to Peru. “Causa” is not just the name of a dish. Its roots trace back to the Quechua word Kausay — “sustenance of life.”
During times of war, Peruvian women prepared food for soldiers while saying: “Por la causa” — for the cause. Over time, the word became something more intimate. A causa is someone who stands with you. A loyal friend. A companion. Someone of your inner circle.
Today, the dish carries that history quietly. And this evening, we share it with you.
What We Will Share
Our host for the evening is Dan Gonzales, a Peruvian artist settled in Lithuania, with a deep love for creativity in all its forms — from visual and digital art to cooking and photography. For Dan, food is another artistic language — one that tells stories through texture, colour, and memory.
He will prepare the most emblematic version of this dish:
Chicken & Avocado Causa
🥔 The Base
A smooth yellow potato mash, seasoned with lime, salt, and ají amarillo.
🥑 The Heart
Shredded chicken layered with perfectly ripe avocado.
🌿 Vegetarian Option
A version prepared without chicken, complemented by cherry tomatoes — equally vibrant, equally generous.
🤝 The Meaning
In Peru, serving Causa is a gesture of inclusion.
It says: you are part of the circle.
How We Dine Is How We Live
This series is not a restaurant night. It is a shared table.
We gather to listen. To eat slowly. To exchange stories across cultures. To explore how food becomes memory, identity, resistance, comfort.
Because often, the way we dine mirrors the way we relate.
