Scientific Breakthroughs #7: Digital Biomarkers from Multimodal Wearables
We're excited to welcome Oriella Gnarra, Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, whose research sits at the intersection of biomedical engineering and neurology, focusing on wearable and nearable technologies for sleep monitoring and the extraction of digital biomarkers in patients with neurological disorders.
✨ Scientific Breakthrough is Nucleate Italy's program dedicated to outstanding scientists and emerging innovators shaping the future of biotechnology. Each episode offers young researchers a space to dive into high-impact research and spark cross-disciplinary dialogue.
In this session, Oriella will share her scientific journey — from designing wearable devices and sensor fusion algorithms during her PhD at ETH Zurich and the University of Bern, to a JSPS-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Tohoku University in Japan, exploring how long-term home monitoring can unlock new digital biomarkers for neurological conditions such as narcolepsy, REM sleep behaviour disorder, and Parkinson's disease.
