Hurvin Anderson Resource

​This recorded course, 1 hour 30 minutes long, is inspired by the contemporary painter Hurvin Anderson and looks at the pull between representation and abstraction. I'll talk you through how to draw from personal memories, reconstructing familiar spaces through paint. It's one video, so you can pause, rewatch, and take each stage at your own pace.

​Step 1: Photographic Collage & Memory
We start by building compositions from your own references. I'll demonstrate combining fragments from personal photographs using tracing paper and collage, working toward a new, fictional layout rather than a literal record of a place. The goal here is to capture the structure of a memory-based environment.

​Step 2: Technique and Colour
This section moves into atmospheric painting. I'll demonstrate layering with watercolours and then move on to acrylic washes as underpainting.

​Section 3: Building Depth and Dimension
In the final section I'll work directly on top of the week two painting, demonstrating how to use oil paints- using your previous references as examples. I discuss stencilling and give some paintbrush techniques for clean lines.

​By the end you'll have moved through the whole process, from a real place to a semi-abstract composition, with something you can come back to whenever you want to push a piece further.
