About Event

How can mass gatherings and targeted interventions sustain activism in moralized minority groups and the broader public? Two innovative studies explore this question from complementary angles.

The first from Annayah Prosser, examines how identity-centering events, like The Vegan Campout, combat burnout among vegans—a moralized minority often facing stigma and isolation. Through field interviews, researchers found that these gatherings create a "temporary social majority," validating vegan identities, fostering community, and reigniting commitment to activism. Such respite is vital for sustaining long-term social change efforts.

The second from Danielle Goldwert, a megastudy of 31,324 US residents, tests 17 behavioral interventions to boost climate advocacy. The most effective emphasized collective efficacy and the emotional rewards of action, increasing advocacy by up to 10 percentage points. Appeals to binding moral values (e.g., purity, sanctity) also proved impactful, even among Republicans. These scalable, affordable interventions offer actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners.

Together, these talks highlight the power of community and strategic messaging—whether through mass gatherings or tailored campaigns—to overcome isolation, reaffirm identity, and catalyze collective action. Join us to explore how these approaches can inspire and sustain advocacy across movements.
