Connecting Biodiversity and Climate Action at Sea: The Acceleration of Marine Protected Areas
Marine Protected Areas and blue corridors can serve as key implementation tools across national jurisdictions and beyond, helping countries advance NBSAPs, NDCs and NAPs while strengthening connectivity across marine ecosystems.
Experiences from Latin America, Africa and the Pacific will highlight opportunities for South-South cooperation, equitable governance, capacity-building and financing. Particular attention will be given to regional approaches, including dialogue under the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, demonstrating how international cooperation and area-based conservation can translate global commitments into effective and durable conservation outcomes.
Looking ahead to a pivotal international calendar, including COP31, BBNJ COP1 and the Ocean Decade Conference, the session will highlight opportunities to strengthen science-policy-action linkages, and foster partnerships needed to translate political momentum into coordinated action for long-term ocean health and resilience.
