In Anna Kavan’s Ice, nuclear war triggers a climate catastrophe. Ice encroaches on civilization, decimating cities and freezing the seas. This ecological disaster does not stop one man’s pursuit of the woman that he strongly loves and pities. She withers at the hands of the Warden, a warlord and her husband who is bent on keeping her as a prisoner. He follows them on boats and chases them down in frozen tundras and helps her escape to warmer conditions in hopes that he can possess her for himself. Abstract and dream-like, this book is a harrowing exploration of ecological disaster, obsession and control.
