Transparency, Accountability, Fairness

​This session is part of the Introduction to Political Technology course at Newspeak House, open to faculty and fellowship candidates only.

​Transparency can be a necessary tool for achieving fairness and accountability in complex multi-party systems, but it is far from sufficient.

​In this session we’ll cover cryptographic building blocks and definitions of transparency, and discuss numerous examples to explore the extent to which transparency in both technical and human-oriented systems has been used or able to achieve meaningful notions of fairness.

​Sarah Meiklejohn is a Professor in Cryptography and Security at University College London. She has broad research interests across cryptography, privacy, and online safety for at-risk users.
