ESP32 & Sensors - Session 2: Soldering Foundations
Building on Session 1, we're getting hands-on with the fundamental hardware skill: soldering. This is where components become circuits, and circuits become devices you can actually use.
What We're Doing:
Soldering fundamentals - technique, tools, safety
Practice connections: wires, headers, through-hole components
Prepare ESP32 boards for sensors and peripherals
Solder sensor connections for our chemistry sensing projects
Build confidence for future projects (mesh networks, voice assistants, custom robots)
The Format: Peer exploration continues. Stewart brings soldering stations, components, and years of burn marks. You bring curiosity and steady hands (or shaky ones - we all start somewhere). We'll practice together, troubleshoot together, and prepare our hardware for the year ahead.
What You'll Leave With:
Hands-on soldering experience
At least one completed ESP32 board ready for sensors
Understanding of what makes a good vs. bad solder joint
Confidence to solder your own projects
Who Should Come: Cohort members from Session 1 preferred. New members welcome if space allows (max 6 people).
Bring:
Your ESP32 from Session 1 (if you have one)
Laptop
Any sensors or components you want to connect
Safety glasses if you have them (extras available)
Safety Note: We'll work with hot tools (300-400°C) and small amounts of solder fumes. Ventilation provided. Not suitable for those with respiratory sensitivities.
