​About Dr. Angela Simms

​Dr. Angela Simms is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Urban Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her groundbreaking new book, Fighting for a Foothold, offers a powerful examination of how historical anti-Black policies have evolved into modern-day fiscal challenges — highlighting the ways public policy, race, and resource distribution continue to shape communities today.

​Drawing from extensive ethnographic research, interviews with civic leaders, and policy analysis, Dr. Simms challenges traditional "color-blind" policy narratives and offers critical insights into the relationship between race, governance, economics, and public institutions.
