Bible-plus-classics reading group returns(!!!) with Session 2.1: Creation and corruption
Welcome back! / Start here!
At long last, we will resume our discussion group where we pair Bible passages with classic literature and philosophy. No beliefs required!
We will be kicking off Season Two at the very beginning with Genesis chapters 1-4, alongside a few other texts about new beginnings.
Our sessions will run for about 2 hours, with a break in the middle. These events are free of tuition, but you must own a physical Bible, and you will be required to purchase or borrow some more books as we go along.
Exact readings for this session
Please prepare by reading the excerpts described in the season doc under "Session 1: Creation and corruption". For this first session, the texts are all free online.
Altogether, these readings may take you about an hour:
More about "Season Two: Trials and Suffering"
In this second season, we’ll cover a variety of stories about trials and suffering. On the Bible side, there will be heavy doses of Genesis and Job, along with many other Old and New Testament episodes. From the wider canon, we’ll get perspectives from the likes of Borges, Oscar Wilde, Kierkegaard, Kafka, Simone Weil, Dostoevsky, Boethius, Nietzsche, Flannery O’Connor, and more. As a capstone, we will conclude with multiple sessions on Melville’s Moby-Dick.
This theme will last us through May 2027, with sessions roughly every other Wednesday.
Unlike in Season One, which served mainly as an introduction to the Bible itself, Season Two will lean more heavily on the “classics” half of our quest. The reading load will be heavier and more modern.
