Beyond the Field: Baseball Empires, Tycoons, & Rebels
⚾ From labor rights to racial justice, sports have always been about more than the game.
Join Rob Elias, Emeritus Professor of Politics and Legal Studies at the University of San Francisco, for a fascinating look at how baseball’s hidden history shaped American society, politics, and even foreign policy. Drawing from his acclaimed books The Empire Strikes Out, Major League Rebels, and his latest, Dangerous Danny Gardella, Elias tells the story of a forgotten outfielder who took on Major League Baseball’s repressive contracts—and helped lay the foundation for free agency and modern player rights.
Through Gardella’s fight and the broader history of rebellion in sports, Elias reveals how athletes, owners, and fans have long wrestled over power, profit, and principle—and why those battles still define the game today. 🧢📘

Accessibility can vary depending on the space, so please research our specific venue to learn more about things like wheelchair access and service animal policies. If you have any accessibility needs not covered here, feel free to reach out and we’ll do our best to support you.
