AI-Guided Robotic TMS: Toward Autonomous, Personalized Brain Stimulation

Abstract: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a technique that uses magnetic pulses to safely and painlessly activate brain cells from outside the head, without any surgery. It's used both to study how the brain works and to treat conditions like depression, but today's approach relies heavily on the skill of the operator and doesn't account for individual differences in brain anatomy and function. This talk will explore how AI and robotics could make brain stimulation smarter, more precise, and tailored to each individual.

Bio: Elisa Kallioniemi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Brain Stimulation Laboratory at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Her research uses AI and robotics to make brain stimulation smarter and more precise, both as a tool for understanding how the brain works and for developing personalized treatments for conditions like chronic pain and addiction.
