Performative Grief: A Dead Dad Club Open Mic
GIVE THE SUPPORT GROUP A STAGE
Is your dad dead, a deadbeat, or even just dead to you figuratively? Then, you are not alone! Welcome to one of the World’s Worst Clubs! Join us in grief, relief, joy, and sorrow, as folks who share this unique flavor of loss and mourning.
Performative Grief is an open mic for members of the Dead Dad Club, an idea borne out of my desire to honor the ten year anniversary of my dad's death. Incredibly homophobic for him to have died on the gayest holiday, Halloween, so I'm making my grief a spectacle!
Folks from our sibling groups for other Dead Parents are always welcome to attend!
Open Mic Expectations
This is a space of communal grieving and support so new and first time performers are welcome and encouraged to take the stage. In that effort, please keep performances to 5 minutes or less (one to two poems, one song, a 5 minute set, etc) to ensure folks have a chance to share. The list will start when doors open at 7 and the show will begin at 7:30.
Additionally, let's be honest, some of our dads probably were racist, sexist, homophobic bigots etc. Those kinds of sentiments are not welcome to be glorified on the mic.
Collective Grief Altar
For many of us, this grief can be an isolating experience. Our relationships to our parents can be rarely be summed up easily, sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful, sometimes something in between. Regardless of where your experience falls, you deserve to be seen and heard.
Attendees are invited to add a photo or sentimental item to a collective grief altar that will be temporarily put together for the performance.
Please make sure to reclaim your items afterwards.
Grief Support Group on Halloweekend?
Okay so you want to dress up?! Come dressed as your dad or in defiance of him! Wear his favorite tie or put together an outfit that would have him rolling in his grave. It’s Halloween! The veil is thin enough to poke a hand through and pay tribute or flip him the bird if you want to.
MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED WHEN NOT PERFORMING!
We will have some masks available at the door, but please come prepared. If you are feeling under the weather in any way, please protect your Dead Dad Club community by staying home.
