​How much of who we are is truly our own? We inherit names, stories, expectations, wounds, and ways of relating from the people who came before us. Yet despite our best intentions, we often find ourselves repeating the same patterns. One Hundred Years of Solitude asks what happens when a family becomes trapped in its own history and whether it is ever possible to truly break the cycle.

​For this edition of Books & Booze, we will explore One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, one of the defining works of magical realism. Spanning seven generations of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo, the novel blurs the boundaries between the ordinary and the extraordinary, weaving together love, ambition, violence, loss, memory, and solitude. As generations come and go, history seems to repeat itself sometimes tragically, sometimes almost comically raising questions about what we remember, what we forget, and what we are destined to carry forward.

​Join us for an evening of thoughtful conversation as we unpack themes of family legacy, repetition, memory, identity, love, power, and the strange ways history can shape our present. Together, we’ll explore why the Buendías seem unable to escape their patterns, what Macondo reveals about the relationship between personal and collective memory, and whether solitude is something we experience alone or something we can inherit.

​As always, the discussion is designed to be accessible and engaging whether you’ve read the entire book or are simply curious about its ideas.

​The evening will feature themed cocktails inspired by the novel’s lush, surreal world and the tropical atmosphere of Macondo, creating an experience that feels immersive without taking itself too seriously. Books & Booze gatherings are a signature Troisième Cercle ritual, offering space for meaningful dialogue, new perspectives, and the relationships that make our community what it is.
