In Good Company and recurvence are excited to present Textiles Untangled for San Diego Climate Week 2026. Join us for a hands-on workshop mapping where our clothes come from, where they go, and how California's new textile law changes everything—all over wine and light snacks at Clos Wine Shop.

Textiles Are Everywhere
They're in our clothing, our furniture, our toys, our cars—even our computers. But how much do we actually know about them? What are they made of? How far did they travel before we bought them? And where do they go once we're done?

What is Textiles Untangled?
It is a collaborative, card-based workshop that uses clothing as a case study to reveal how the global textile system really works. You will build the production chain card by card—fiber, spinning, dyeing, assembly, transport, retail, use, and disposal. Then, you will trace the social and ecological impacts, and work as a group to identify where meaningful change is possible.

No lectures. No slides to sit through. You build it, you see it.

Note: Textiles Untangled was launched in 2021 by Green Donut, inspired by the pedagogy of the Climate Fresk.

Why Now, Why San Diego?
This July, California's SB 707—the Responsible Textile Recovery Act—came into effect. It makes California the first state in the country to hold clothing and textile producers responsible for what happens to their products at the end of their life. Brands, retailers, and manufacturers selling here are now on the hook for collection and recycling. Cities, reuse organizations, and thrift networks are about to sit at a very different table.

Most people in this state, including professionals working in and around textiles, have no idea this happened. This workshop is your chance to understand the system the law is trying to fix—and to see exactly where San Diego fits into it.

You'll Leave Understanding:

  • Materials 101: What fabrics are actually made of, and which ones to choose.

  • The Full Lifecycle: The journey of a garment, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal.

  • Industry Impact: The true cost to the planet and to people.

  • Greenwashing: How to read a sustainability claim critically and spot the empty ones.

  • Systems Thinking: The circular economy applied directly to something you're wearing right now.

  • SB 707 in Practice: What changes for producers, cities, and reuse organizations.

  • Concrete Action: Steps you can take at the individual, business, and collective levels.

(Data sources include the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Textile Exchange, OXFAM, Fashion Revolution, and ADEME).

Is This For Me?

  • If you're curious: You wear clothes, you've wondered where your donations go, or you've stood in front of a "sustainable" label and not known whether to believe it. No background is needed. This is designed for you.

  • If you're a professional: Sustainability and compliance leads, product and sourcing managers, designers, brand and retail operators, waste and materials managers, municipal staff, educators, and researchers. You will leave equipped with actionable knowledge to share across your organization, alongside a clear understanding of California's SB 707 and broader international frameworks like global textiles EPR and the EU’s ESPR.

The best sessions have both community members and industry professionals at the same table. That's the point of the format.
