Microwave, Millimetre-Wave, and MetaDevices (M3) Laboratory
The M3 laboratory tour will highlight the University of Alberta’s expertise in developing low-SWaPC (size, weight, power, and cost) communications, navigation, and sensing solutions for the protection of Canadian Armed Forces personnel and the resilient operation of CAF assets in denied or degraded electromagnetic threat environments. Scenarios on display will include on-soldier biometric sensors that operate without batteries from Arctic to desert conditions, low-profile conformal antennas for UxV and counter-UxV systems, and electromagnetic ‘skins’ for RF signature management. The tour will also showcase the M3 Lab’s rapid prototyping and characterization facilities, including its anechoic chamber where antenna systems are characterized and synthetic electromagnetic threat environments can be generated. The M3 Laboratory’s R&D projects currently support 40-50 highly-qualified personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, professors, and technicians. R&D priorities are guided by industry and end-user partners.
