Edinburgh Future Frontiers, Now
N.b: this event is a safe space for people wanting to discuss technologies other than AI. We will reject any registrations wanting to present an AI-related technology, including but not limited to AI in Science models and automated labs.
ARIA, 5050 and PRIMED are looking for ideas at the edge of possible.
We’re hosting an intimate dinner for people who want to wrestle with the technologies that should change the world, but haven’t yet.
If you’re excited by ideas that sit right on that boundary, we’d love to have you there.
Over the evening, you'll take on one technology and unpack:
What it claims to do
Where it breaks down today
What concrete steps would need to happen for it to actually work
No prep is required besides having an answer to the above: it will be chalk-talk style.
The goal is to bring together a room of people who care about the gap between bold claims and reality and who might be up for closing it.
Please only sign up if you're willing to give a 5-minute talk. We're looking for novel, frontier, audacious ideas (and for this event, no ai in science or lab automation).
What to expect
Food, mingling, and a room full of ambitious technology ideas.
ARIA and 5050 UK will each give a short spotlight on what they do and how people can get involved.
We’ll then introduce the chalk-talk format, before the room votes on which technologies to discuss.
The evening will then move into the 5-minute informal pitches.
There will be time throughout for follow-on discussions, meeting others, and exploring ideas that might be worth taking further.

ARIA is an R&D funding agency, funding teams of scientists and engineers to pursue research at the edge of what is technologically or scientifically possible. ARIA is now recruiting for its third cohort of Programme Directors.
5050 UK helps scientists and engineers become founders tackling the world’s biggest problems. Free, part-time. Powered by ARIA and run by Fifty Years, the programme distils lessons from backing 135 companies whose founders have raised over $6B into a free, part-time venture programme for technical people with ambitious ideas. Early applications open for 5050's Sept cohort here.
PRIMED community, run by researchers, creates spaces for interdisciplinary entrepreneurial exploration across the UK.
