About Event

Purpose:

This workshop will be organized by and for movements, youth activists, and COP participants who are interested in learning about new research, movement and policy strategies, and capacity-strengthening tools to center justice in the energy transition. We will provide frameworks and tools for participants to develop local advocacy and campaign strategies and empower communities to demand a just energy transition.

This workshop is convened by Oxfam and will be organized together with the ANGRY Alliance, bringing a powerful coalition of movements and organizations advocating for a just transition at a local, national, and global level.

Speakers:

  • Serayna Solanki - ANGRY alliance. Serayna has supported Oxfam Novib by designing Youth Movement Learning Trajectories and Strategies on JET and helping create their Fossil Fuel Phase Out Toolkit. Serayna is co-leading the Just Transition Work within ANGRY.

  • Hajar Al Belaji - ANGRY alliance. Hajar is co-leading the Just Transition Work within ANGRY, Focusing on Education and Research on Just Transition. Hajar has been following JTWP policy with Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) since COP28

  • Clémence Abbes, Oxfam -Clémence is a Senior climate justice advisor at Oxfam Novib where she supports youth- led climate movements.

  • Mateo Adarve Zuluago, Climate Justice Researcher at Oxfam

Approach and Methodology:

This session will foster a collective conversation on how we can center narratives of justice, equity, and care in discussions about the future of the energy transition. We will both name the root cause of the problem (climate colonialism, fossil capitalism) and the opportunities movements have to craft their own liberating narratives on just transition and a fossil-free future.

We will combine different methodologies to make it as interactive and engaging as possible, including organizing a world café to delve into topics related to Just Transition - drawing from Oxfam’s recent report on Unjust transitions, the ANGRY theory of change on just transitions and false solutions, and the PICS Manifesto for Palestinian liberation and ecological justice.

We will also share practical tools for building compelling decolonial narratives and for developing campaign strategies to resist fossil-fuel projects and power up locally led renewable energy.

As a result, participants will have:

  • An enhanced knowledge of new narratives for a Just Energy Transition centered on principles of justice and care.

  • Discovered practical and popular education tools to use for their own local organization.

  • Connected with key civil society policy leads influencing the energy transition negotiations at COP.
