World Building with Ashley Brett Chipman
Every world begins as a feeling before it becomes a place. In this workshop, you'll learn to take your ideas and build something solid from it — a moodboard, a color story, a soundtrack, a set of rules only your world obeys.
Working through image, texture, sound, and language, you'll develop a reference library that captures the look and atmosphere of your world, then distill it into a visual and sensory document you can actually use. Along the way, Ashley will pull back the curtain from her work on Servant, American Horror Stories, and Death of Rasputin. Exercises are fast, structured, and designed to get you out of your head and into the work.
Designed for writers, designers, filmmakers, dancers, game makers, and anyone building a fictional world from scratch, you'll leave with a complete worldbuilding moodboard, a curated playlist, and the beginning of a world bible — plus a method you can return to every time you start something new.
Ashley will be running this workshop in September with the Juggerknot Theatre Company in Miami. We are psyched to help her get back in the teaching rhythm with this test run here in Brooklyn.
Bring a laptop and a dream. (Or at least a project. Or an idea for a project.)
