About Event

How do you tell if a system is trustworthy? What does an audit trail look like in practice? How do you protect your own expertise instead of handing it to a model? Ask Yolanda Gil in our Builder's Room.

Yolanda Gil has spent three decades building the infrastructure that makes AI trustworthy. She's the 24th President of AAAI, co-chair of the national CRA/AAAI 20-Year AI Research Roadmap, and the researcher behind the W3C provenance standard much of the internet's trust infrastructure runs on. She now directs USC's Center on AI for Health.

We'll get into:

  • What outlasting the hype requires. Her path from Madrid to Carnegie Mellon to USC, and what it teaches women about building a career that survives multiple AI waves.

  • Tools that make people sharper, not obsolete. How AI can amplify expertise instead of replacing it.

  • The stakes of getting it wrong in health care. How her research on trust and provenance applies to health care AI, where an error can mean a missed diagnosis rather than a bad recommendation.

  • Her personal checklist. The questions she asks before trusting any new AI system.

  • Why data on AI matters as much as AI itself. Lessons from co-chairing the Stanford AI Index and the national research roadmap.

  • Advice for the next generation. What leading AAAI, the Roadmap, and the National Science Board taught her about training future researchers.

We're excited to have Nazeli Ter-Petrosyan, Technovation alumna and Research and Innovation Engineer at Opply, moderating this conversation. She specializes in biomedical imaging, with a focus on hyperspectral imaging for cardiac surgery and interpretable electronic nose (e-nose) systems. At Opply, she develops agentic AI systems for the food and beverage industry. She is also a founding member of the fashion-tech startup Wearify, where she develops AI-powered virtual try-on solutions for luxury fashion brands.
