Inside NYC’s AI Policy: A Conversation with Council Member Virginia Maloney
A working session on NYC’s proposed AI liability legislation with founders, investors, researchers, and policymaker Virginia Maloney.
New York City is considering new rules for who bears responsibility when AI causes harm.
But what do those rules look like when you’re actually building or funding an AI company?
We’re bringing together 30-40 founders, investors, and AI researchers at Civic Hall to find out.
We’ll put the proposed bill on the table and read through it together: definitions, liability, safeguards, enforcement, and the places where the language could have real consequences for companies building AI.
Then, we’ll sit down with Virginia Maloney for a fireside conversation about the thinking behind the proposal and the questions that emerge from the room.
The final part of the morning belongs to the group.
What works? What needs clarification? What are we missing? And where could well-intentioned rules create unintended consequences?
The goal isn’t simply to talk about AI policy. It’s to give the people building, funding, and researching these systems an opportunity to understand the policy being proposed and contribute informed perspectives while the conversation is still developing.
