Metadata Isn't Plumbing: Building Video Workflows That Don't Destroy Your Data

Every video stream carries more than pixels. GPS coordinates from a drone, ad insertion cues for monetization, sensor telemetry from a traffic camera, franchise relationships that power recommendations — this metadata is what transforms a passive feed into an operational tool. Yet across the industry, it's still treated as an afterthought: stripped during transcode, fragmented across systems, and owned by no one.

This session walks through the full metadata lifecycle for streaming developers and architects. We'll start with the business case — what "metadata debt" actually costs in broken discovery, delayed launches, and endless manual reconciliation — drawing from real-world examples in both OTT entertainment and surveillance workflows. From there, we'll survey the technical landscape of time-based embedded formats: KLV for defense and telemetry, SEI NAL units, ID3 tags in HLS, and EMSG boxes in CMAF/DASH. Finally, we'll dig into the engineering challenge at the heart of it all — how to preserve and transform metadata across protocol conversions, transcode stages, and delivery formats without losing frame accuracy or operational context. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of metadata-aware pipelines that keep your data intact from ingest to playback.
