Dave started as founder/CEO of Aslan Computing (sold to Servinet in 1998), then ran marketing at PayPal in 2001, before spending 2008-10 as a VC at Founders Fund alongside Peter Thiel and Sean Parker — where his $3M seed portfolio (42 companies, including Credit Karma, Twilio, SendGrid, Lyft, and Life360) turned into $200M, a 60X+ return.
In 2010 he founded 500 Startups, which has grown to $1B+ AUM, 2,500 portfolio companies across 75 countries, and 40+ unicorns including Canva, Grab, GitLab, and Solana.
In 2019 he launched Practical Venture Capital, a secondaries firm that buys into aging microVC funds and breakout companies to help LPs and GPs skip the J-curve. Across it all he's backed hundreds of startups, 30+ unicorns, and 10+ IPOs, landed on the Forbes Midas List in 2016 and 2017, and still holds a BS in Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Johns Hopkins — where the real education was ultimate frisbee with fellow engineering nerds.
Dave would regularly stop in Hong Kong over the years and was one of the catalyst's of the StartupsHK movement back in 2009, with one simple sentence: "You should build your own startup ecosystem in Hong Kong."
