About Event

A month of exploring marriage, performance, identity, and the stories we tell about the people we love.

How well do we really know the people closest to us? We build relationships on shared stories, the version of ourselves we offer, and the version of our partner we choose to believe. Over time, those stories can become performances, carefully managed for each other, for our families, and for the world watching. Gone Girl asks what happens when the gap between who we are and who we pretend to be becomes impossible to ignore.

For this edition of Books & Booze, we will explore Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, one of the defining psychological thrillers of the last two decades. When Amy Dunne disappears on the morning of her fifth wedding anniversary, suspicion quickly falls on her husband, Nick. Told through alternating perspectives, the novel peels back the layers of a marriage that looked perfect from the outside, exposing resentment, manipulation, ambition, and the roles we play to be loved. As the media frenzy grows and the truth keeps shifting, the book raises sharp questions about trust, gender, reputation, and who gets to control the narrative.

Join us for an evening of thoughtful conversation as we unpack themes of marriage, identity, performance, power, gender expectations, and the stories we construct about ourselves and others. Together, we’ll explore the infamous “Cool Girl,” why we’re so drawn to unreliable narrators, how public opinion shapes private lives, and whether any of us are ever fully honest in love.
