Beyond the Echo Chamber: Climate Journalism Today
Informing the public about the causes and impacts of climate change has never been an easy task. As a macro-concept, it’s difficult to personalize the degree of impact climate change will have on general readers, even as those impacts increase exponentially. Meanwhile, organized and well-funded disinformation campaigns by the fossil fuel industry undermine climate science and have made the issue “controversial,” causing millions to question the very fact of its existence. On top of all of this, the media model has been unstable since the internet hit our screens more than 2 decades ago, making climate journalism a precarious and not always financially viable horse to back. This panel will dive into the state of climate journalism, what we hope to achieve by telling climate stories, and how we should move forward in the current political climate. Panelists will include climate journalists from outlets including Bloomberg, Heated, E&E and Trellis. A networking happy hour will follow the panel.
