Resilient Islands — Learning from Osaki Town: Building a Circular Society in Ukerewe /

Turning “waste” into a resource for the future of local communities.
This event is part of the ongoing “Resilient Islands” series organized by JSY-Global Inc. This time, we will explore how the experience of Osaki Town in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan — known for achieving a recycling rate of over 80% — can offer lessons for building a sustainable circular society on Ukerewe Island, Tanzania.
Ukerewe Island faces challenges related to the lack of a sufficient waste management system, including open burning of waste and impacts on the local water environment. In contrast, Osaki Town has developed a community-wide resource circulation system centered on waste separation and recycling, through close collaboration among local government, businesses, and residents, without relying on an incineration plant.
This session will focus on the question:
“What can Ukerewe Island learn from Osaki Town’s experience?”
Practitioners from Osaki Town and Ukerewe Island will engage in direct dialogue. Rather than simply transferring a Japanese model, the discussion will explore how locally led systems can be developed within different institutional, cultural, and environmental contexts, with particular attention to public-private collaboration, community participation, and human resource development.
This event is recommended for those interested in international development, African development, circular economy, waste management, sustainable urban and community development, as well as those interested in approaches to international cooperation that support local communities in solving their own challenges.
From island to island, let us connect experiences and ideas and think together about what a sustainable future could look like.
