About Event

Stigmas of Sustainability is a panel conversation about the barriers that can make sustainability feel out of reach, unfamiliar, or even intimidating. Hosted during the inaugural Chicago Climate Week, the session brings together perspectives from people working at the intersection of culture, access, and everyday environmental action.

The discussion will look at how sustainability is often shaped by more than just information or good intentions. Cultural expectations, cost, generational differences, and climate anxiety can all influence whether people feel able to participate, and whether sustainability feels practical or reserved for a select few.

Designed for a diverse audience—local climate practitioners, (un)ethical consumers, and more—the session will explore questions of access, participation, and representation in a way that is grounded and honest. Rather than focusing only on big-picture climate language, the panel will center the lived experiences that shape how people engage with sustainable choices in real life.

Hosted by the team at the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), a sustainable community development nonprofit based in Uptown, Chicago, this conversation reflects ICA’s interest in creating space for deeper, more inclusive dialogue around climate action. Panelists will be announced soon.

Whether you work in sustainability, are curious about the topic, or simply want to better understand why these conversations can feel complicated, this session offers an opportunity to hear different viewpoints and reflect on what more accessible climate engagement could look like.
