SCHOOL, a contemporary arts project space housed in an abandoned school in Lincoln Heights, presents its inaugural exhibition, Homecoming.
Opening Saturday, October 3, from 10 AM–4 PM, in conjunction with Los Angeles Design Weekend, Homecoming presents over twenty artists spanning disciplines and mediums, from emerging to established.
Built in 1903 as the Florence Critchley School for Wayward Girls, and later a charter high school, what remains are the bones of a building primed for new life, still echoing with its history.
Emptiness wants filling. So we inhabit, activate, make space real with our objects and bodies, make bodies real with objects and space. We fill the space with things of interest. Opportunities for attention. Past and future edging softly against the now, inhabited, fulfilled.
Is it haunted?
It is now.
Nostalgia may be tempting, but the beauty of memory is all that remains. Actual return to the cherished moment, a building in disrepair, the half-dreamt remembrances of youth—impossible. They always tell us you can never go home. So our Homecoming is a return to self, the self that was and the self that will be. It is a nature, a character of being, rather than a place, to which one can always go home.
Here, in the hollowed-out classrooms, hung on the auditorium walls, throughout the hallways with their echoing linoleum, painting, sculpture, ceramics, film, and sound, and poetry, along with less readily classified installations, will be on view by appointment through October 10, culminating in a closing dance that evening.
