About Event

Project Horn Book Club 001: Imagination for Liberation

This September, we’re reading together.

Our first theme is Imagination for Liberation.

How do we imagine home from elsewhere? How does displacement shape what we think is possible? And what does it mean to imagine beyond the world we’ve inherited?

Our main read is Dinaw Mengestu’s The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, a novel exploring migration, displacement, memory and belonging through the life of an Ethiopian immigrant in Washington, D.C.

Alongside it, we’ll draw on selected ideas from Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Decolonising the Mind as a companion text for thinking about culture, language and liberation. You don’t need to read the whole companion text.

You don’t need to be an academic or seasoned reader. Just come curious and ready to talk.

Sunday 20 September
7pm BST 8pm CEST / 9pm EAT / 2pm EDT 11am PST

Online via Google Meet
Free

The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is our main read. We’ll share details of the selected companion reading with everyone who signs up.

Cost shouldn’t stop you joining. If getting hold of the book is a barrier, let us know when you register.

Come read, think and imagine with us.
