Sobremesa(Porto): Nothing Stays in the Lab
Join us for an epic debate during Porto AI Week 🚀
Every lab is a building, but buildings have doors.
You already live with the part that got out: AI.
It drafts your emails, sits in your group chat, answers the 3am question you would not ask a friend.
Two years ago it was a demo inside someone's research org, now it is in your pocket.
Ask the people building it what actually keeps them up and the answer is not your inbox. It is capability leaving the building faster than anyone can decide what to do with it.
Biology that no longer needs a lab, political and economic shocks that arrive before institutions have a word for them, democracy runs on what people can be made to believe, capitalism runs on what human work is worth.
And there is a second half to the problem, we are building these systems to listen to us.
Alignment is a polite word for an uncomfortable question: what happens the day the thing you trust quietly decides it knows better?
To help us debate on this topic, we're joined by Kyle Cheng former Anthropic, Oracle & AWS.
A few things we'll sit with:
What escapes first, the capability or our ability to agree on what to do about it?
Can anyone in a race like this choose to slow down, and if not, who decides?
If it ends up smarter than us, is obedience still the thing we should be asking for?
Here's how this event works:
No monologues, no slides, just an open debate between peers and facilitated by the speaker.
🍷🍴 Ticket includes 1 glass of red or white wine, 1 beer per person & finger food (French Fries Calico, Papadums & Manga Chutney, Traditional Samosas and Crispy Chicken Fingers)
Refunds aren't available, but you're welcome to pass or sell your ticket to a friend.
PS: Calico Porto has a restaurant, where you can reserve a table for after the event and continue de conversation amongst yourselves.
